Old Castle of Lieto

The stone and wooden fortifications of Lieto Castle stand 55 meters above sea level, commanding views over the surrounding Finnish countryside and ancient transport routes.

Archaeological excavations reveal three distinct periods of occupation from the Late Bronze Age through the Middle Ages, with the final phase ending around 1370.

The site contains remnants of eleven medieval buildings and numerous artifacts, including arrowheads, crossbow bolts, and spearheads dating from the 6th century onward.

The University of Turku manages the archaeological site, operating it as an educational facility where visitors can examine medieval defensive structures and artifacts.

Researchers have discovered 150 crossbow bolt heads and 14 arrowheads at the site, indicating substantial military activity during its active period.
