Petäjävesi Old Church

The church exhibits Gothic architecture with an octagonal design, featuring a high roof and a bell tower added in 1821 to the pine log structure.

Local peasants constructed the church between 1763 and 1765 under architect Jacob Clementsson Leppänen when the region belonged to the Swedish crown.

The interior displays traditional Finnish craftsmanship through hand-carved elements including the pulpit, pews, galleries, and decorative chandeliers from the 18th century.

The church opens daily from June to August between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, while winter visits from September to May require advance reservations.

The structure ceased regular religious services in 1879 after a new church opened nearby, leading to decades of abandonment before its restoration began in 1929.
