Petäjävesi Old Church, Wooden church in Petäjävesi, Finland.
Petäjävesi Old Church is a wooden church in Petäjävesi featuring Gothic architecture with an octagonal floor plan and pine log construction. A bell tower was added to the structure in the early 19th century.
Peasants from the area built this structure between 1763 and 1765 under architect Jacob Clementsson Leppänen's direction while the region was part of the Swedish realm. The construction responded to the community's need for a local worship building.
The interior displays traditional Finnish craftsmanship through hand-carved elements such as the pulpit, pews, and galleries that shape the space. These handmade pieces reveal the skill and care that went into creating the worship environment.
Visiting is most convenient during the warmer months from June through August when the building opens regularly. For visits at other times of the year, it is best to arrange ahead with local authorities or organize a tour.
The structure fell out of regular use in 1879 when a newer church opened nearby, and it stood abandoned for decades afterward. Restoration efforts beginning in 1929 saved the building from complete decay.
