Keuruu Old Church, Protected wooden church in Keuruu, Finland.
Keuruu Old Church is a wooden structure featuring richly decorated interiors with furnishings from the 18th century. The church contains painted biblical scenes on its walls and represents traditional Finnish wood construction methods.
The building was constructed in 1759 and served the community as the main church until 1892, when a new place of worship was built. Its role as a religious center for over a century is now preserved through its protected status.
The interior contains paintings by Johannes Thilen depicting apostles, prophets, kings, and evangelists, with a central altar piece showing communion scenes.
The site is accessible during the summer months from June to August and can be reached on foot without difficulty. It is helpful to arrive with comfortable walking shoes and check opening times before visiting.
The architect Antti Hakola designed this church without formal plans because he could not read or write. Despite this limitation, he created a lasting structure that survives to this day and speaks to remarkable craftsmanship.
