Helsinki Velodrome, Outdoor velodrome in Itä-Pasila, Finland

The Helsinki Velodrome is a 400-meter cycling track with steep banking of 37.5 degrees in the bends and 16 degrees on the straights. Today the facility serves multiple sports, hosting everything from field hockey to American football and cycling competitions on its surfaces.

Construction began in 1938 in preparation for the 1940 Summer Olympics, which were canceled. The facility finally saw major use during the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where it hosted track cycling events.

The facility shows how Finns approach sports spaces by sharing them across different disciplines. You see evidence of this flexibility today, with the grounds hosting everything from cycling to field hockey in rapid succession throughout the year.

The venue is located in Itä-Pasila and easily reachable by public transport. Since the schedule changes frequently based on which sport or event is happening, check ahead to see what is currently taking place or if it is open for training.

The central area was transformed from natural grass to artificial turf during renovations from 1997 to 2000, significantly expanding what the venue could host. This change allowed the space to accommodate everything from cycling races to field hockey and American football simultaneously.
