Ivalo is a village along the Ivalo River within the Arctic Circle and serves as the commercial center of Inari municipality in Lapland. The settlement lies around 10 kilometers from the airport, which provides the main transportation link for the region.
The village was completely destroyed during the German retreat in the Lapland War between 1944 and 1945 and was rebuilt afterward. This wartime experience shaped the development of the settlement in the postwar period.
