Tornio Church

The white wooden structure stands at 12 meters high with traditional Finnish architectural elements and features a bell tower visible from multiple locations.

Built in 1686 by architect Matti Härmä, the church served both Finnish and Swedish-speaking communities during a period of significant trade in Lapland.

The church contains preserved elements of 17th-century Finnish ecclesiastical design and functions as a central location for religious ceremonies in northern Finland.

Located at Seminaarinkatu 2, the church opens regularly during summer months, while visits outside this period require advance arrangements.

French scientist Maupertuis conducted measurements from the church bell tower to determine Earth's shape, marking a significant scientific expedition in the 18th century.
