Kukkola Rapids

Kukkola Rapids stretch for several kilometers along the Tornionjoki River, forming a natural border between Finland and Sweden. The water drops in distinct stages here, creating an impressive sight of foam and spray.

These rapids have served as an important fishing location since the 15th century, when documented estates first appeared on both riverbanks. The role of this place as a food source and boundary area has remained significant through the centuries.

Local fishermen use traditional techniques with long-handled nets called lippo to catch whitefish in specific spots along the rapids. These fishing methods are woven into daily life here and show how closely people and river are connected.

You can reach the rapids from Koskitie road, which branches off from highway E8, and parking is available near the observation points. Visit on a calm weather day to see the falls at their best.

Fishing rights at this location are still governed by centuries-old agreements between local families rather than formal national borders. This shows how traditional communities have kept their own rules independent of state boundaries.
