Varkaus

Varkaus is a town in North Savo positioned between two sections of Lake Saimaa, with the water body forming a defining feature of its landscape. The geography shapes how the built environment sits among the natural surroundings, creating distinct areas separated by the lake.

The town formed in 1929 from sections of two neighboring municipalities joining to create a market town. City status was granted three decades later in 1961, marking an important step in its development.

The Museum of Mechanical Music houses one of the largest collections of self-playing instruments in Northern Europe, featuring music boxes and orchestrions from different periods. Visitors can explore how these crafted machines once entertained people in homes and public spaces.

The best time to explore is outside the coldest winter months, when walking and visiting museums become more comfortable. The town center is easy to reach, and local services are spread across a manageable area.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church holds a monumental altar fresco spanning around 240 square meters, representing the largest religious mural in all of Scandinavia. The artwork fills the altar space with overwhelming visual presence that strikes visitors immediately.
