Aulanko, Cultural landscape and nature reserve in Hämeenlinna, Finland
Aulanko is a woodland park featuring hiking paths, picnic spots near forest ponds, and an observation tower overlooking the lake. The grounds span different elevations and combine open meadows with dense forest sections.
A colonel started shaping this park according to English design principles in 1883 and carried out the transformation until 1938. English landscape ideas guided the layout and arrangement of the various areas that remain today.
The granite tower built in 1906 shapes the landscape and shows features typical of Finnish park design from that era. Visitors walking through can see how nature and human creation blend together across the grounds.
The grounds sit about 5 kilometers from downtown and are easy to reach by public transport. The marked trails let you choose different routes depending on how much time you have.
The grounds hold traces of two ancient shores dating back more than ten thousand years. The hilltop also contains remnants of a historical fortified settlement.
