Säynätsalo Town Hall, Brutalist town hall in Säynätsalo, Finland

Säynätsalo Town Hall is a red brick structure with four two-story wings arranged around an elevated courtyard at its center. A tower-like council chamber rises above the overall composition, marking the heart of this geometric arrangement.

Architect Alvar Aalto won a design competition in 1949 with his entry titled 'Curia' for this municipal center. Construction took place between 1949 and 1952, establishing a landmark for the community.

The building shows how a Nordic community integrated municipal offices, a library, homes, and shops in one place. This mix of public and private spaces reflects how locals still use the structure today.

The town hall offers guided tours and has two guest rooms available for overnight stays. Check visiting hours in advance to plan your visit appropriately and make the most of your time there.

The council chamber features distinctive roof beams that Aalto called 'butterflies' for their graceful shape. This poetic touch reveals his thoughtful consideration of every architectural element.
