Petkeljärvi National Park

Petkeljärvi National Park features esker ridges and pine forests in eastern Finland, located in the North Karelia region. The landscape contains numerous small lakes tucked between narrow hillsides shaped by glacial forces thousands of years ago.

The park was established in 1956 and preserves visible traces of military fortifications from the Continuation War. These remains show how the region served as a border zone between Finland and the Soviet Union during World War Two.

The nearby Karelian village of Möhkö reflects regional traditions and daily life in this border area. The place carries strong connections to Karelian culture and how communities have shaped their identity here.

The Petkeljärvi Outdoor Centre provides lodging and camping facilities along with marked hiking trails of varying lengths. Visitors can choose routes based on their fitness level and available time.

The area is part of the UNESCO North-Karelian biosphere reserve, placing it under international nature protection. This recognition reflects the ecological importance of glacial formations and forest systems found here.
