Patvinsuo National Park, National park in North Karelia, Finland.
Patvinsuo is a national park in North Karelia covering marshlands, clear lakes, and pine forests across roughly 105 square kilometers. The area is connected by a network of marked trails that lead through different landscape types.
The park was established in 1982 to protect the natural landscape and traces of earlier human activity in the area. A smokehouse hut from the late 19th century stands as evidence of how people used these waters for fishing trips.
The park serves as a research location for studying bog types found across Finland, displaying southern raised bogs and northern string bogs in one place. Visitors encounter these different wetland ecosystems firsthand while walking the trails.
The park features around 80 kilometers of marked trails that visitors can explore on their own. The Suomu Nature Information Hut at the entrance provides maps and advice to help you choose routes suited to your interests and abilities.
Lake Suomunjärvi stands out for its sandy shores and forested peninsulas lined with tall pines where visitors can swim. Several lakeside locations offer traditional saunas right at the water's edge.
