Olo n:o 22, Environmental sculpture near Hietalahti Harbor, Finland
Olo n:o 22 is a steel sculpture made up of more than fifty polished spheres in varying sizes. These are scattered throughout the Hietalahti harbor area and nearby courtyards and commercial spaces.
The sculpture was created in the early 2000s, winning a competition for art installations in the area. It was designed by artists Pasi Karjula and Marko Vuokola.
The work references notions of movement and energy within an urban setting. The polished spheres reflect the sky and surrounding buildings, creating a constantly shifting visual experience as people move through the neighborhood.
The sculpture is spread throughout the Hietalahti area and easiest to discover by walking through the neighborhood. The spheres are located at different spots, so it helps to take time exploring the district.
Unlike typical monuments, this work has no clear boundary and invites visitors to create their own walking routes through the area. The polished surfaces capture colors and light moods, appearing entirely different depending on the time of day.
