Glosholm lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse in Porvoo, Finland.
Glosholm lighthouse is an octagonal brick tower that once stood on an island in the Pellinge archipelago near Porvoo. The original structure measured 16.3 meters (53 feet) in height with a diameter of 8.9 meters (29 feet) and served the surrounding maritime area.
Construction of this lighthouse took place between 1832 and 1835 under orders from Tsar Nicholas I. The tower ceased operations in 1863 when the Söderskär lighthouse became the primary aid for maritime navigation in the region.
The tower design inspired Finnish author Tove Jansson, who adapted its form into the Moominhouse featured in her children's book series. This creative connection shows how a single structure can influence an artist's imagination and become part of beloved stories.
Only a five-meter foundation remains visible on the island today. Access requires private boat transportation from Pellinge harbor, which is the main starting point for visiting this site.
After being deactivated in 1863, the tower served as a daymark to help ships navigate even in poor lighting conditions. The structure remained standing until its destruction in March 1940 during the Winter War.
