Kärnäkoski Fortress, 18th-century military fortress in Savitaipale, Finland.
Kärnäkoski Fortress is a stone military fortification in Savitaipale, Finland, built with three demi-bastions placed along its western and southern sides. The walls are made from stone quarried locally, including amphibolite, mica gneiss, and granodiorite.
The fortress was built between 1791 and 1793 as part of a Russian defensive line meant to protect Saint Petersburg. It formed one section of a broader chain of fortifications spread across the Finnish borderlands.
The name Kärnäkoski comes from the river that runs beside the fortress, which once served as a natural line of defense. Walking the grounds today, visitors can clearly see how the waterway shaped the layout of the walls and bastions.
The site is freely accessible and has parking nearby along with informational signs on the grounds. Visitors are advised to follow the marked paths to get a clear view of the full structure.
Construction was overseen by General Alexander Suvorov, who later became famous for his campaigns in the Alps. The layout was designed by French military engineers who had fled the French Revolution, bringing their knowledge to this remote corner of Finland.
