St. Mary's Church, Catholic church in Meilahti, Helsinki, Finland
St. Mary's Church is a Catholic church in Meilahti, Helsinki, featuring modern architectural design with religious artwork throughout its interior. Inside, visitors see paintings of the Virgin Mary and a stone mosaic depicting the Crucifixion, with seating for about 150 people in the pews.
The church was built in 1954 by architect Kaj Salenius and became the second Catholic congregation to establish itself in western Helsinki after the Protestant Reformation. This construction marked the growth of Catholic community life in an area that was previously dominated by Lutheran tradition.
The church welcomes a diverse international community from the neighborhood, creating a space where different cultures and languages come together in worship. This openness reflects the multicultural character of Meilahti and makes it a gathering place for the local community.
The church is located on Mäntytie 2 in a residential area and is easily recognizable from the street. The space is accessible to visitors who wish to attend services or simply explore the building and its interior.
Inside the church stands a mechanical organ built by Richard Jacoby in 1965, featuring seventeen registers and remarkable acoustic depth. The three bells attached to the organ ring on Sundays, adding a distinctive musical character to the building.
