Karkali Strict Nature Reserve

The reserve covers one square kilometer of herb-rich forest on a peninsula within Lake Lohjanjärvi, featuring linden and hazel trees on calcareous soil.

The area contained three residential houses from the 16th century until 1910, and in 1902 Archbishop Gustaf Johansson constructed a villa with paths for hazelnut gathering.

The reserve contributes to scientific research while maintaining public access, making it different from other strict nature reserves in Finland.

Visitors must follow marked trails ranging from 0.5 to 6 kilometers, and the entrance is accessible through Finnish Highway 1, about 18 kilometers from Lohja center.

The reserve manages Norway Spruce populations through selective cutting to protect native deciduous forest species that grow in the calcium-rich soil conditions.
