Mustio Castle, Manor house in Raseborg, Finland
Mustio Castle is a white wooden structure in Raseborg with classical architecture featuring details from the late 18th century. The building sits within a 22-hectare park containing ancient trees and statues, with hotel rooms and a restaurant also located on the grounds.
Magnus Linder II commissioned this estate between 1783 and 1792, making it one of Finland's largest non-religious wooden structures. The project was part of the development of country estates during the Enlightenment period in Scandinavia.
The interior shows the shift from rococo to neoclassical style with Gustavian furniture that reflects tastes of Finnish nobility. The furnishings and decorations tell the story of aesthetic changes that swept across Europe during that period.
The site is easy to explore, with pathways through the park and clear areas for different activities. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, especially if it rains, as some paths can become slippery.
Marie Linder, who lived in the castle, was known for her unconventional lifestyle, including writing and horseback riding in men's clothing. She was a figure who challenged the social expectations of her time.
