Korouoma

Korouoma is a protected canyon valley carved by the Korojoki River, featuring steep rock walls that tower significantly above the meandering waterway at its base. The landscape showcases the geological forces that have shaped this deep ravine over thousands of years.

The valley functioned as a key timber transport route during the logging era, with remnants of shelters along river corridors revealing the extent of this activity. The river's power and the valley's geography made it a natural pathway for moving harvested logs to market.

The valley bottom served as pastureland for cattle and sheep that grazed on natural meadows for generations. Today, old barns scattered through the area bear witness to these farming traditions and how people adapted to living in this landscape.

Two marked hiking trails begin from the Saukkovaara parking area and provide access to different sections of the canyon and its valleys. Sturdy footwear is essential because the paths are uneven and can be slippery, especially during wet seasons.

During winter months, multiple waterfalls freeze into massive ice formations, making this location a destination for specialized ice climbing that attracts climbers from across the region. The frozen cascades offer varying difficulty levels for those with the proper experience.
