Marjaniemi lighthouse, Protected maritime lighthouse in Marjaniemi, Hailuoto, Finland
Marjaniemi lighthouse is a cylindrical brick tower standing 25 meters tall at the westernmost point of Hailuoto island and features three distinct sections. The structure contains 110 interior steps leading from the base to the top platform.
Architect Hampus Dalström designed this structure in 1871 as his fourth lighthouse project and it was first lit in 1872. This establishment marked an important step in improving navigation along Finland's Gulf of Bothnia coast.
The lighthouse stands near former residences of keepers and pilot stations, showing how maritime communities once lived here. Today it represents the seafaring past of the Gulf of Bothnia region.
The climb up the narrow spiral staircase reaches an observation platform with views stretching about 20 kilometers across the Bothnian Bay. Wear comfortable shoes and allow enough time since the route is steep and has limited space.
This building is considered one of Finland's best-preserved brick lighthouses and features modern technology including an operational webcam system. This blend of historic appearance and contemporary systems shows how the structure balances past and present.
