Hailuoto Church, Lutheran church building in Kirkonkylä, Finland.
Hailuoto Church is a church building on Hailuoto Island in Finland featuring reinforced concrete walls and extensive glass windows in a modern design. The structure accommodates around 300 worshippers and displays a contemporary architectural approach throughout.
The building was designed in 1972 by architects Matti and Irma Aaltonen to replace a wooden church from 1620. The previous structure had been destroyed by fire in 1968.
The church interior houses rescued items from its predecessor, including a wooden pulpit decorated with painted details that connects worshippers across generations. Visitors notice these crafted elements as they move through the space.
The building sits on Hailuoto Island and is reached via regular ferry services from mainland Finland. Visitors should check ferry schedules before planning a trip to the island.
This was Finland's first church building constructed entirely from concrete and glass, establishing a new building type for the Nordic region. Inside stands an 11-tone pipe organ made at a factory in Kangasala.
