Liminka Bay

Liminka Bay is a protected wetland extending along the Bothnian Bay coast in Northern Finland, home to more than 300 bird species year-round. The landscape consists of shallow water zones and extensive reed beds connected by wooden walkways and five observation towers offering views across the flat terrain.

The area has served as essential fishing grounds since medieval times, supporting local communities through sustainable practices across generations. This long relationship with fishing shaped how people understood and used the bay's resources.

The visitor center explores how the rhythm of bird movements shapes the way locals experience their seasons, dividing the year into cycles tied to migration patterns rather than the calendar. This perspective shows how the bay's natural cycles have long been central to life in this region.

Five observation towers connected by wooden walkways make the site easy to navigate, and free binoculars are available at the visitor center for birdwatching. The flat terrain and accessible pathways allow visitors of all ages and abilities to move around comfortably.

During spring and autumn migrations, tens of thousands of swans, geese, and ruffs gather at the bay in enormous congregations. These massive assemblies are so significant that they attract birdwatchers from around the world.
