Oulu Market Hall, Market hall in Market Square, Oulu, Finland
Oulu Market Hall is a brick building with two internal aisles containing 62 wooden shop stalls arranged on a single floor. The structure combines Gothic Revival and Art Nouveau design details visible throughout its wooden interior framework and supporting columns.
Construction was completed in 1901 following a city council decision from 1889 that required butchers to relocate from open markets. This change reflected growing concerns about food safety standards and urban sanitation in the early industrial era.
Merchants have operated from wooden stalls inside the building for more than a century, maintaining a local tradition of selling food and crafts. The space reflects how the city sustains its connection to regional producers and small-scale retailers.
The building sits on the main market square and is easily reached on foot from the city center. The narrow aisles between wooden stalls mean moving slowly and having limited space to browse, particularly when the hall is busy.
Historic granary buildings standing next to the main hall have been converted into craft shops selling handmade items and local goods. These connected spaces extend the shopping experience beyond the main stalls into a cluster of specialized retailers.
