Oulu City Theater, Municipal theatre in Oulu, Finland
Oulu City Theater is a theater building on Vänmanninsaari island in the center of Oulu, Finland, with four stages of different sizes. The building was designed by architects Marjatta and Matti Jaatinen and also houses a restaurant on the premises.
The theater was founded in 1931 under the name Oulun Näyttämö and was first based at a different location in the city. In 1972, it moved to the current building on Vänmanninsaari island, which was purpose-built for it.
The theater sits on a small island in the city center, which gives it a setting that visitors notice as soon as they arrive. Audiences come here for a range of shows, from productions for children to larger stage works, making it a place used by many different people throughout the year.
The building is close to the market square and easy to reach on foot or by public transport from the city center. There is a restaurant inside that is open before and after performances, which makes it convenient to plan an evening around a show.
The theater offers guided tours backstage, where visitors can see the costume workshops and the stage machinery that the audience never sees during a show. These tours give a clear sense of how much work goes into a production before it reaches the stage.
