Frenckell paper mill, Paper factory in Tampere, Finland.
The Frenckell paper mill is a former industrial building in Tampere, Finland, sitting right along the Tammerkoski rapids in the heart of the city. The complex is made up of red brick structures and a tall chimney, and it is protected under the local town plan.
Abraham Häggman founded the paper factory in 1762, making it one of the first industrial sites in the Tampere area. It remained in operation for over two centuries, shaping the economic life of the city before eventually being converted for new uses.
The Frenckell complex now houses restaurants and shops inside rooms that still show exposed brick walls and heavy wooden beams from the factory years. Walking through, you get a clear sense of how the building shifted from industrial work to everyday social life in Tampere.
The site is an easy walk from Tampere Central Station and sits close to the central market square. Visiting during the day gives you the best access, as most of the spaces inside the buildings are open and busy at that time.
The chimney on the site dates to 1870 and was at the time one of the tallest in all of Finland. It still stands today and can be spotted from many points across the city center.
