Haaganpuro, Urban brook in Helsinki, Finland
Haaganpuro is an urban waterway that flows for about 12 kilometers through Helsinki. It travels from Maununneva through residential areas like Pirkkola and the Central Park before emptying into Pikku Huopalahti bay.
The waterway was formerly called Mätäpuro until 2011, when officials renamed it to avoid confusion with a nearby river system. The change helped clarify local geography for residents and visitors.
The waterway links different neighborhoods and serves as a place where residents connect with nature in the urban setting. People walk along its banks to observe water birds and plants that thrive near the stream.
The waterway is accessible from several points, especially along Central Park, where marked paths make walking easy. The best time to visit is from spring through autumn when the paths are dry and easy to navigate.
The waterway hosts a notably large trout population living right in the heart of the city, adapted to urban surroundings. An innovative underground fish ladder structure helps fish navigate past obstacles in the stream's path.
