Porkkala Lighthouse, Maritime navigation structure in Kirkkonummi, Finland.
Porkkala Lighthouse is a navigation beacon on the Finnish coast built from red brick walls on a reinforced concrete foundation. The structure transmits white, red, and green light signals and reaches a focal height of 26 meters with an operational range of about 12 nautical miles.
The lighthouse was built in 1920 to replace an older beacon at Porkkala-Rönnskär and improve navigation along this coastline. During Soviet control until 1955, the structure suffered significant damage that was later repaired when operations resumed.
The lighthouse contains living quarters designed for two operators and their families, following similar architectural patterns to Bengtskär Lighthouse.
The lighthouse is remotely controlled from a center in Helsinki and can be reached from land-based access points. The area is part of a protected nature reserve, so check local guidelines for visiting hours and visitor policies.
The lighthouse is leased by Finnish mountaineer Veikka Gustafsson, creating an unusual connection between extreme sports and coastal management. The beacon stands within a protected grey seal nature reserve, which shapes how the landscape is managed and experienced.
