Description
The National Library of Guyana is a major institution located in central Georgetown with around 400,000 books in its collection. The facility serves more than 22,000 registered members who access a wide range of materials for research and reading.
History
A Scottish-American philanthropist provided funding in 1906 that made construction possible, and the doors opened to the public in 1909. This beginning launched the library as a lasting educational resource for Georgetown residents.
Culture
The library holds manuscripts from important Guyanese writers including A.J. Seymour and Ian McDonald that visitors can explore. These collections show how the place connects people to their own literary voices and creative heritage.
Practical
The library is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM and until 1:00 PM on Saturday. Free internet access is available to members during their visits.
