Moslavačka gora, Nature reserve and mountain range in Bjelovar-Bilogora and Sisak-Moslavina Counties, Croatia.
Moslavačka gora is a forested mountain range and nature reserve spread across Bjelovar-Bilogora and Sisak-Moslavina Counties in Croatia. The rolling hills are covered by beech, oak, hornbeam, and chestnut woodlands, forming one of the more compact forested areas in the region.
A castle was built in this area in the 13th century to control the routes crossing the hills during a period of regional conflict. Over time the military role of the site faded and the forests grew back over much of what had once been settled land.
Local people walk these wooded hills to gather mushrooms and berries, a habit that follows the rhythm of the seasons. This connection to the forest is part of everyday life for communities in the surrounding villages.
Trails for walking and cycling wind through the wooded hills at varying levels of difficulty, so it is worth checking the route before you go. Small towns around the edges of the range offer places to stay and basic services for visitors.
Fossils of prehistoric elephants and rhinoceroses have been found in the area, pointing to a time when the landscape supported very different wildlife. These discoveries were made in the same hills that hikers walk through today.
