Sveti Juraj, Coastal settlement in Lika-Senj County, Croatia
Sveti Juraj is a small coastal settlement in Lika-Senj County, Croatia, with a natural harbor on the Adriatic Sea at the foot of the Velebit mountain range. The village sits along the main coastal road and looks out toward the small islet of Otočić Lisac just offshore.
Archaeological finds from around Sveti Juraj suggest the area was used during Roman times as a stop along the Adriatic coast. In the medieval period, the surrounding region fell under the control of Croatian noble families who held much of this stretch of coastline.
Small fishing boats and drying nets line the waterfront of Sveti Juraj, and fresh fish remains central to what is cooked and eaten here. Visitors can watch the daily rhythm of a working fishing village simply by walking along the shore.
Sveti Juraj sits on the coastal road D8, which connects Senj to the north and Karlobag to the south, making the village easy to reach by car. Those wanting to visit Northern Velebit National Park will find trail access starting from the hills directly above the settlement.
The name Sveti Juraj means 'Saint George' in Croatian, and the settlement has carried this name for centuries after a local church dedicated to that saint. That church is still standing today and gives the place a quiet sense of continuity that goes beyond its coastal setting.
