Veliki Zavižan

Veliki Zavižan is a mountain peak of roughly 1,676 meters high within Northern Velebit National Park and offers far-reaching views across the mountain range and the Adriatic Sea. The elevation allows you to see numerous geographic features at once and to recognize different landscape zones.

The meteorological observation post at Veliki Zavižan was established in 1953 and has been the oldest high-altitude weather monitoring network in Croatia ever since. This station has been documenting weather conditions at this exposed mountain point for decades.

The mountain lodge at the summit serves as a gathering place for hikers and scientists from across the region. The location bridges mountaineering tradition with everyday significance for people who engage with these peaks.

The mountain lodge near the summit accommodates roughly 28 people and has dining facilities for about 40 guests, which operates year-round. Visitors should prepare for harsh weather conditions and changeable temperature patterns, especially during colder months.

The peak sits at the boundary between Mediterranean and continental climate zones, creating unexpected weather patterns that scientists regularly study. This intersection allows you to observe two completely different climate zones in close spatial proximity.
