Zavratnica, Protected bay in Lika-Senj County, Croatia
Zavratnica is a narrow bay on the Adriatic coast in Lika-Senj County, cutting deep into the Velebit Mountains and surrounded by vertical cliff faces on both sides. It is classified as a protected landscape area, which places it among Croatia's officially recognized natural sites.
In the early 1900s, a promenade and a terrace were built along the bay to make the area accessible while protecting it from damage caused by visitors. This work marked one of the first organized efforts to manage the site, long before it received its official protected status.
The name Zavratnica comes from a Croatian word suggesting something tucked away or hidden behind a barrier, which fits the bay's sheltered position between tall cliffs. Visitors walking along the shoreline today can see stone steps and old walls that were built to guide people through the narrow passage between water and rock.
The bay is best reached on foot from the Jablanac ferry terminal along a coastal path, or from Zavratnica village via an alternative trail. The ground is rocky and uneven throughout, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting out.
The bay shelters around 130 plant species, most of them native to this rare mix of mountain and coastal conditions found in the same small area. This overlap of mountain plants growing beside coastal ones in such a confined space is uncommon along the Adriatic.
