Zavratnica, Protected bay in Lika-Senj County, Croatia
Zavratnica is a bay on the Adriatic coast that cuts deeply into the Velebit Mountains, surrounded by sheer cliff faces. The waterway varies in width from 50 to 150 meters as it extends roughly 900 meters inland.
At the start of the 1900s, local authorities built a promenade and terrace in the bay's center to prevent environmental damage. These early efforts to shape the site show how long the area has been valued for protection.
The name refers to the bay's distinctive V-shaped form that cuts into the land like an inverted valley. Visitors can observe how water and stone have naturally shaped the space into the dramatic landscape they see today.
Visiting on foot works best, either through a 30-minute coastal path from Jablanac ferry terminal or via an alternative trail from Zavratnica village. Wear good shoes and be prepared for rocky, uneven terrain.
The area contains roughly 130 plant species, with about 100 native to this rare combination of mountain and coastal environment. This botanical mix is uncommon and makes the site particularly noteworthy for nature enthusiasts.
