Pejačević Castle in Virovitica, Historical château in Virovitica, Croatia
Pejačević Castle is a baroque château in Virovitica composed of three linear wings arranged around a central hallway and topped by a dome in late baroque and classical style. The structure displays the formal geometric symmetry typical of European castle design from this architectural period.
Count Antun Pejačević commissioned the castle's construction between 1800 and 1804 based on designs by Viennese architect N. Roth. This building period coincided with Virovitica's growth as a regional trading center.
The castle houses the City Museum, where exhibitions explore how wood shaped Virovitica through traditional crafts, everyday objects, and local customs. Visitors can see how woodworking remains woven into the town's identity and daily life.
The building underwent comprehensive renovation from 2016 to 2019 and now features modern facilities and enhanced exhibition spaces. Visitors will find well-maintained rooms and clear layout throughout their visit.
Five designer wooden bridges throughout the surrounding park reference Virovitica's historical nickname 'Little Venice' and offer varied views of the castle. These bridges transform a walk through the grounds into a series of distinctive vantage points.
