Lim bay, Ria in western Istria, Croatia
Lim bay is a ria that extends about 10 kilometers into the Istrian peninsula and is surrounded by high limestone walls. The steep shores shape the landscape and create a striking natural setting for the entire bay.
The name comes from the Latin word 'limes', referring to the boundary between the ancient Roman provinces of Dalmatia and Italia. This historical border shaped the region's identity for centuries.
Local fishermen continue to use traditional methods in these waters, and several restaurants along the shores serve fresh fish and seafood caught daily from the bay.
Boat tours regularly depart from the nearby towns of Rovinj and Vrsar and offer explorations of both coastlines. The best time to visit is on calmer days when boats run smoothly and views are clearer.
The northern and southern shores display different plant types due to sunlight exposure: deciduous forests on the south and evergreen forests on the north. This natural contrast makes each part of the bay botanically interesting.
