Sveta Nedjelja, Coastal settlement on Hvar Island, Croatia
Sveta Nedjelja is a settlement on the southern coast of Hvar Island that drops steeply from mountain peaks down to the Adriatic Sea. The village sits in a sheltered cove surrounded by tall limestone cliffs that rise directly from the water.
An Augustinian monastery was built high above the village and served as a spiritual center until the end of the 18th century. Only the Church of Our Lady of the Snows survives from that monastic complex today.
The place keeps old ways of making wine, oil, and perfume that you can see practiced by locals throughout the year. Fishing boats still come and go from the shore, continuing rhythms that have shaped life here for centuries.
The village is reached only through a tunnel and sits in relative isolation on the island. The nearest medical facilities are located in a neighboring village within driving distance.
A first-century Roman shipwreck lies underwater offshore and attracts divers interested in ancient remains. The steep rock faces above the village offer numerous climbing routes for those who seek that kind of challenge.
