Karanac, Rural tourism settlement in Kneževi Vinogradi, Croatia
Karanac is a rural settlement in eastern Croatia with traditional houses spread across eight streets featuring long front porches. Strings of dried red paprika hang from these homes, creating a distinctive visual characteristic of the place.
The settlement was first documented in 1357 as a royal village and developed from three separate communities. During Ottoman occupation from 1526 to 1687, these distinct settlements merged into the place known today.
The Street of Forgotten Time displays traditional workshops where potters, coopers, and weavers work using time-honored methods. These active craft spaces allow visitors to watch techniques passed down through generations.
The settlement features several family restaurants and wineries where visitors can sample regional Slavonian specialties. The layout is easy to explore on foot and craft workshops are open during the day for visitors to observe.
A private museum houses approximately 2000 ethnographic objects documenting everyday life from earlier times. The collection began in 1897 and provides insight into craft traditions and domestic practices of the region.
