Zmajevac, Kneževi Vinogradi, Agricultural settlement in Kneževi Vinogradi, Croatia
Zmajevac is an agricultural settlement in Kneževi Vinogradi that spreads along the southern side of Baranja Mountain with around 1000 residents. Farming, vineyards, and wine production shape the landscape, with family-run wineries and traditional restaurants serving regional food throughout the community.
The settlement has roots in Roman times and rose to importance before 1500 under Peter Gereb's leadership in medieval Hungary. This early prominence shaped its development through the following centuries.
The local elementary school teaches in both Croatian and Hungarian, reflecting the mixed heritage that has shaped this community. This bilingual approach is woven into daily life here.
The settlement is easily accessible via two wine roads, Katolički surduk and Reformatski surduk, connecting to various family wineries and restaurants. Arriving by car is practical since the wineries and dining spots are scattered across the area.
A protective dike extending about 32 kilometers was built in 1872 to guard the settlement and farmland from Danube River flooding. This engineering feat was essential to the community's survival in this low-lying region.
