Bokanjačko blato

Bokanjačko blato is a protected wetland in Zadar County that spans a large area with diverse habitats and ecosystems. The site sits in a karst landscape where water naturally collects, supporting varied plant and animal communities.

In the early 1900s, engineers built a pipeline from this wetland to supply water to Zadar city. Later, in the mid-1900s, drainage systems were installed to convert the land for farming purposes.

The wetland supported generations of local fishermen who caught eels using traditional methods suited to these waters. The place remains tied to how people here have always lived alongside water.

The area is wet and often swampy, so proper footwear is essential for visiting. The best time to explore is during drier seasons when the ground is firmer.

An underground tunnel system beneath the site controls water flow and prevents flooding. This hidden infrastructure has shaped how the land has functioned for decades.
