Nagykanizsa, Administrative center in Zala County, Hungary

Nagykanizsa is a town in Zala County in southwestern Hungary that extends along the Principális-csatorna canal linking the Zala and Mura rivers. The town serves as a transportation hub connected by multiple rail and road routes to other Hungarian cities.

The fortified settlement was established in 1300 and remained under Turkish control from the early 1600s until 1690 as a strategic defense point. This extended occupation left lasting marks on the local architecture and regional structure.

The parish church built in 1760 incorporates stones from a former mosque, making the area's religious transformation visible through its physical structure.

The town is best reached by car or train, as it sits on several main routes. Visitors should know that spring through autumn offers the best conditions for exploring the area, as canals and surrounding paths are most accessible then.

The surrounding area contains ancient wooden pile roads that have crossed marshy terrain since medieval times and still preserve their original construction. These uncommon structures reveal the medieval engineering solutions of the region.
