King Béla III established the original monastery in 1183, bringing twelve Cistercian monks from Trois-Fontaines Abbey in France to develop the region.
The abbey's interior displays Matthias Gusner's and Joseph Schnitzer's religious artwork, including depictions of the Battle of Saint Gotthard from 1664.
The structure now functions as a Roman Catholic parish church, offering regular services and maintaining its architectural features through ongoing preservation efforts.
The monastery walls incorporate remains of the medieval church into the current theater building, connecting different historical periods of the structure.
