Basilica in Eger

The Basilica in Eger is a Catholic church with two towers rising 55 meters high and a central dome reaching 37 meters above ground. Its neoclassical architecture makes it one of the largest religious buildings in the country and defines the city's skyline.

Construction began in 1831 under the direction of architect József Hild and was completed in 1837. The building replaced a medieval religious structure that had previously served as a mosque.

The building displays sculptures by Italian artist Marco Casagrande across its main facade and pediment. Walking through the entrance, visitors can see how European artistic influences shaped the decoration of this religious space.

The interior is open to visitors who want to explore the architecture and artworks throughout the day. A good starting point is the staircase on the east side leading to the main entrance, which offers a full view of the front facade.

The heart of Archbishop János Pyrker, who commissioned this building, is buried in its crypt. This unusual burial choice reflects the deep connection between the religious leader and the place he helped create.
