Bátorligeti-láp, Protected wetland in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, Hungary.
Bátorligeti-láp is a wetland with extensive peat bogs and marshes located within Hortobágy National Park, providing homes for many plant species. Water-filled channels run through the area and support populations of birds that pass through seasonally.
This wetland formed after the last ice age and preserves natural structures that are thousands of years old. Its ecological systems have remained largely unchanged since that distant past.
Shepherds in the area have practiced traditional grazing for generations, shaping how the land looks and is used around the wetland edges. This way of working with the landscape remains visible to visitors today.
Spring and summer are the best times to visit, when guided tours are offered and wildlife is most active. Access is through marked trails that begin at Bátorliget village and are easy to follow.
The area is home to specialized peat moss species that differ from their relatives in northern and central Europe due to isolation. These mosses and rare insects have adapted to survive in these particular conditions.
