The Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Győr is a three-aisled church with a classicist facade of large semicircular windows, a pediment topped by vases, and a bronze main door made by Schima Bandi in 1938. A green-domed lantern with a cross rises above the crossing, and the original Romanesque apse survives on the west side. The interior has three naves separated by two rows of square pillars that conceal Gothic supports.

Founded with the Diocese of Győr under King Stephen I, the church was first built in Romanesque style in the 11th century; only its apse survives from that period. After the Mongol invasion it was rebuilt in Gothic form, and in the 15th century the Héderváry chapel was added and the whole church was Gothicised under Bishop Orbán Nagylucsei. Damaged in the Turkish wars, it was rebuilt in early Baroque style by Giovanni Battista Rava from 1639 to 1645, and its interior was completed in the 1780s with frescoes by Maulbertsch.

The cathedral holds the Herma of Saint Ladislaus, a skull reliquary that reached Győr in the early 17th century after passing through Várad, Prague, Pozsony and Veszprém. In the north aisle hangs the weeping image of the Virgin Mary, brought from Ireland in 1655. The bishop's throne canopy was made for Empress Maria Theresa and later bought by Bishop Zichy.

The cathedral is located in central Győr at Lépcső köz 9 and welcomes visitors throughout the week. It's best to respect any services taking place and check opening hours in advance to plan your visit.

The wrought-iron railing of the pulpit dates to 1783 and features intricate roses and bows with a door bearing the craftsman's initials. This metalwork detail is often overlooked but reveals the high quality of ironwork from that era.
