Great Mosque of Pekanbaru, Religious complex in Pekanbaru City, Indonesia.
The Great Mosque of Pekanbaru is a religious complex with three levels, where upper sections serve as prayer halls. Lower floors contain offices and meeting spaces, accommodating approximately 4,500 worshippers at capacity.
The mosque was founded in 1963 and completed in 1968, with a major expansion in 2000 enlarging its grounds. During its early years, it also served as home to a university department before becoming solely devoted to religious purposes.
The building combines architectural styles from Malay, Turkish, Arabic, and Indian traditions in its design. This blend becomes visible in the elaborate dome and minaret, which reflect different Islamic regions.
The grounds are well accessible with escalators connecting different levels, making it easy for visitors to move around. Areas for non-Muslim visitors are clearly marked, and it is advisable to wear modest clothing.
In its early decades, the building housed the Faculty of Islamic Studies before it became Sultan Syarif Kasim University in 1973. This dual role as both a religious center and academic institution is unique in the city's history.
