Carlow Castle, 13th-century castle ruin near River Barrow in Carlow, Ireland.
The structure features a rectangular keep with two remaining circular towers and thick stone walls measuring 9 feet in width.
William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, constructed this defensive fortress between 1207 and 1213 to protect a critical river crossing point.
The castle marks the location where the Exchequer of Ireland operated from 1361 to 1374, serving as the capital of Irish administration.
Visitors can observe the remaining west wall and two cylindrical towers, which stand as evidence of medieval Norman construction techniques.
In 1814, a physician's attempt to convert the castle into a mental hospital resulted in an explosion that destroyed most of the structure.
