County Carlow Military Museum, Military history museum in Carlow Town, Ireland
The County Carlow Military Museum occupies a former 19th-century church building within the St. Dympna's Hospital complex grounds. The collection displays uniforms, weapons, photographs, and personal items from Irish Defence Forces, international peacekeeping personnel, and local soldiers across different conflicts.
The museum was established in 1995 following the death of local soldier Donie Cunningham, whose uniform formed the collection's foundation. It gradually expanded to document the region's military history and its connections to international conflicts over decades.
The museum reflects Carlow's connection to global conflicts through the stories of soldiers who served far from home in different eras. It shows how the local community participated in major international military events and how these experiences shaped the town's identity.
The museum is located at the Health Services Complex on Athy Road and can be fully explored in about one hour. Plan to visit during daylight hours and wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk through different areas to see all the exhibits.
The museum features a full-scale reconstruction of a World War I trench that shows how soldiers lived during that conflict. This recreation was built to honor the sacrifice of Carlow soldiers who fought in the war.
