Milford Mills, County Carlow, Historical watermill in County Carlow, Ireland
The Milford Mills complex stands on the banks of the River Barrow with two large water wheels measuring 18 and 22 feet in width.
Built around 1775 by James Conolly, the mill generated an annual turnover of £195,000 by the 1830s and exported products to Manchester and Liverpool.
The facility transformed local industry by making Carlow the first inland town in Ireland to receive electric power through its 1891 conversion.
The former industrial complex now functions as a power generator, contributing electrical energy to Ireland's national power distribution network.
The mill contained the most powerful water wheels in Britain and Ireland during the 1860s, demonstrating advanced engineering for its time period.
