Tullamore Dew, Irish whiskey distillery in Tullamore, Ireland.
Tullamore Dew is a distillery in Tullamore producing triple-distilled Irish whiskey. The facility includes copper pot stills, fermentation tanks, and warehouses where hundreds of oak casks line the walls.
The distillery was founded in 1829 and changed hands several times before coming under the management of Daniel Williams in the late 19th century. After decades at other locations, production returned to Tullamore in 2014.
The name comes from the initials of former manager Daniel Edmund Williams, playing on the English word for dew. Visitors can trace how different cask types change the flavor of the finished drink in the tasting hall.
Tours last about an hour and typically end with a tasting of several varieties in a dedicated room. The complex sits on the edge of town and offers parking for visitors arriving by car.
A small portion of the contents evaporates through the cask walls every year in the warehouses, a phenomenon some call the angels' share. The air in these rooms smells sweet with maturing alcohol, even when no cask is opened.
