Ashbourne, human settlement in County Meath, Ireland
Ashbourne is a town in County Meath, just north of Dublin, with a recently developed town center that includes shops, restaurants, and a cinema. On its outskirts, there is an amusement park and several office parks that draw workers from the wider Dublin area.
The town was once called Killeglan, a name meaning 'Déaglán's church,' pointing to its early religious roots. A memorial called Rath Cross, standing in the town today, marks a local engagement during the Easter Rising of 1916.
The name Ashbourne traces back to Frederick Bourne, a businessman who linked it to the ash trees growing in the area. Today, old stone churches sit alongside newer shops and offices, showing how the town has shifted from a quiet rural settlement to a busy commuter hub.
The town is easy to reach from Dublin by car along the M2, and bus services also connect it to the city and the airport. The town center can be walked around comfortably, though the amusement park on the outskirts is better reached by car.
Tayto Park was originally owned by the Tayto crisp company, which made its name with Cheese and Onion flavored crisps that became a staple of Irish snack culture. Visitors to the park can still tour a factory and see how the crisps are made.
